He is a Professor Emeritus of Kobe University, an Adjunct Professor of RMUTT and COE of Smart Spheres Workshop Co., Ltd. He graduated Bachelor’s degree from Kobe University (Kobe, Japan) in 1969 and obtained the master′s degree in 1971. He began his research career as a research associate in the polymer chemistry group of Prof. Tsunetaka Matsumoto at Kobe University, and he subsequently received the doctor’s degree of engineering from Kyoto University (Japan) in 1976. He carried out postdoctoral research at Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin in 1976-1977 with the late Prof. Kurt Ueberreiter. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1985 and Professor in 1995 at Kobe University. He was director of The Instilment Center at Kobe University in 2000-2002. His research focused on (1) radical polymerization in aqueous and supercritical CO2 dispersed systems (emulsion polymerization; miniemulsion polymerization, dispersion polymerization; suspension polymerization; seeded polymerization, etc), (2) controlled/living radical polymerization in aqueous and supercritical CO2 dispersed systems and (3) synthesis of functional polymer particles (hollow particles, nonspherical particles, capsule particles, etc) and their applications. He has published over 360 original papers in the field of polymer colloids and above 80 patents. He formed a venture company, “Smart Spheres Work Shop, Inc.”, in July 2006. He has served as a vice president of The Adhesion Society of Japan (1998-2002) and Vice president, The Society of Polymer Science, Japan (2008-2010). He is the recipient of The Award of the Adhesion Society of Japan in 2003, The Science Award of Hyogo Prefecture in 2005, ASJ Award for Outstanding Achievement in Adhesion Science and Technology (The Adhesion Society of Japan) in 2009 and SPSJ Award for Outstanding Achievement in Polymer Science and Technology (The Society of Polymer Science, Japan) in 2011.
